A few frugal tips as the winter season approaches …

I mentioned it was time to get our chimney inspected to George. He said the local fire department provides free inspections. If our chimney flunks the inspection, we’ll have to pay a chimney cleaning service to sweep it. But if it passes, we’re done! It works for me! If you have a fireplace, you may want to check out your own fire department and see if they provide a similar service.

Second, we only have a great room (no separate den or family room). I hate limiting play and snacks when the grandchildren visit; what’s family movie night without popcorn? I found this picture I used with someone who was helping me decorate this room (it wasn’t done but we were getting closer) so you could see my concerns with the couch.

She mentioned I could buy a new painter’s canvas drop cloth and just pop it on the couch during their visits. Look how well it turned out! The kids still feel like they are in a nice room but everyone can relax now that the couch is safe! The drop cloth on the couch came from Amazon. It didn’t feel scratchy at all and I didn’t iron it first (though I probably should have tried!) I think the room looks cozy and will welcome them when they visit during the Christmas holidays.

We finished the room by the way so I should post a few pictures later. My friend has a real knack for decorating with inexpensive finds from discount stores and we didn’t spend much money at all.

Your house is really clean…do you miss it being dirty when the kids were around?

Even though I gripe about it now, I do think I am going to miss the messes!

P.S. Are you going to give more tips about cast iron? I still have “sticky” issues…

Thanks Johnlyn; I miss the kids but I don’t miss the mess! It’s not always this clean though there’s obviously not as much to do.

Tell me about your cast iron. What are you cooking in it? How do you clean it?

I don’t wash mine with soap; if mine decides to act up, I make puffed pancakes. I’ll see if I can find a link to the recipe (you can feed them to the dog if you can’t eat wheat!)

I don’t use soap on it. I make a lot of eggs though. Over time it just isn’t quite as non-sticky. So I put bacon grease on it and then put it in the oven for a bit.

It makes it non-sticky again, but I thought once it was non-sticky, it would stay non-sticky unless you used soap. Hope that made sense!

I think I bookmarked that recipe. I could try it with rice flour!

I feel like I have to keep cooking things that need butter. Also for some reason scrambled eggs seem to suck all the seasoning out of the pan!

We rarely use bacon (another one of my allergy issues) but when I cook it, I feel like my pan needs to be scoured really well with extremely hot water and a plain scouring pad. Maybe it’s the sugar in the bacon that caramelizes with the heat? I have better luck with butter and/or extra virgin olive oil.

Here’s a link to the puff pancake recipe:

I’m loving all the comments, questions, and suggestions – thank you!

AHHHH! I can’t make bacon in mine either! Bacon grease works and lately I’ve been using coconut oil. I’ll try butter next.

Thanks for all of your help!
